5 Human Foods You Should Never Feed Your Dog
Did you know the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center averages nearly 200,000 calls a year? And most animal poisonings are caused by human foods and household items.
We all know that household items need to be put in a safe place that your dog can’t get to, but the bigger danger is when you feed your pets human foods that are harmful to them that you may not be aware of.
Here are 5 from a list of 16 courtesy of ASPCA Pet Health Insurance:
1) Grapes
They’re toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure. If Fido does happen to get into the grapes, it’s best to call your local animal poison control center to see what action you should take.
2) Gum & Candy
Dogs usually end up swallowing it and that is where the danger lies. They could choke on it or worse, have it block their digestive track.
3) Avocados
Although a great thing for burning fat for humans, avocados contain ‘persin’ the fungicidal toxin that is present in the fruit (yes, avocados are fruit!). Persin is a death sentence for dogs. So, if you make guacamole, don’t let Rover lick your fingers!
4) Raw Yeast Dough
First off, humans shouldn’t eat this, and it goes double for dogs. Raw yeast dough could expand in the dog’s belly and cause bloating and painful gas. At its worst, it could cause their stomach to twist and cause a medical emergency.
5) Fatty Foods
These aren’t great for humans either. Things like: bacon, hot dogs, fried chicken and ribs can cause your dog to vomit or have diarrhea. In some dogs it can cause pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas. If they do get some fatty foods and look like they are having stomach issues, contact your local veterinarian.
